The intake
Doctors work in Baltimore
Baltimore patients search for care the way they search for everything else, by neighbourhood and by need. The city holds two large academic health systems, a dense set of independent practices and a steady flow of residents who move between neighbourhoods, so searches for primary care, specialists and urgent appointments spread across the whole metro rather than pooling downtown. Paid search in health carries a high cost per click, which tells you the demand is real and that the practices bidding on it are competing for the same appointments. Franchises and hospital affiliated groups hold a share of the visibility, and independent practices hold the rest. The demand is there in volume, and it is asked for in local terms.
